    ‘It’s not what you know, it’s who you know…’

    Whilst this statement doesn’t always ring true, there’s no doubt that networking and having contacts in your industry can be a great way to get ahead. Further, it’s never too late to start building out that little black book of professional contacts.

    Not sure how to make the right contacts? Here’s a quick guide to help you get the most out of your professional networks:

    What is networking?

    In business terms, networking is the process of speaking to professional contacts and sharing information with them.

    Networking can be formal or informal, and can take many different forms and is an absolutely vital part of modern business and, what’s more, it’s probably nowhere near as hard as you think.

    Why is networking important?

    No matter what industry you’re in, knowing the right people can pay off.

    When it’s done well, networking can lead to more clients, more exposure.

    Who should I network with?

    The short answer: anyone and everyone.

    The slightly longer and more helpful answer: you should never pass-up an opportunity to expand your network. Even if the person doesn’t necessarily work in a similar role to you, it doesn’t mean that their organisation.

    The most effective professional networks are the deepest ones. You never know which of today’s connections will pay dividends in the long run, so never pass up an opportunity to talk to someone new.

    How do I do it?

    Everyone has their own approach to networking. Essentially, whatever works for you is fine. However, here are a few things to remember:

    Take stock of your contacts – Don’t think you have any useful contacts? Think again. Old school friends, family members, friends of friends and friends of family members. All of these could be valuable resources, and many of which will be happy to re-connect with you.

    Tap into existing networks – Whether online, or face-to-face. Go to industry events, attend webinars, get involved on social networks and start getting your name out there in your industry.

    Get your voice out there – Keep up-to-date with, and comment on, the latest industry developments. You’ll soon start to be seen as a source of authority in your sector. 

    Write things down – Saving people’s details is a key part of networking efficiently. Otherwise you just end up with a wedge of business cards (technical term) with no faces or stories to put to the names. Making a brief note of the conversations you’ve had is a great way to easily pick up where you left off.

    Keep in touch – Possibly one of the hardest parts of efficient networking is making sure you’re front of mind when opportunities come up. If you haven’t spoken or interacted with a particular contact in a while, coming out of the blue and asking for help finding a role will probably not be successful. A quick email checking-in every so often will certainly pay dividends in the long run.

    Other networking dos: Bring a business card, make the most of every opportunity, be patient, be proactive, be persistent.


    Take it too fast – It’s a conversation, not a pitch process. Unless you’re incredibly lucky, networking isn’t simply a case of approaching the right person and hit it off straight away It takes time to build the relationship, and trying to force something right-off-the-bat will only serve to annoy.

    Make it all about you – It’s not. Flattery certainly plays its part in networking, and one-way conversations will not endear you to anyone. Ensure you listen as much as you speak, and don’t forget to demonstrate what’s in it for them.

    Be embarrassed to ask for help – Some people find it awkward to ask for anything. However, networking is typically a mutually beneficial process between people who (generally) quite like each other. It’s not getting something for nothing. In fact, you’ll be surprised how helpful some people can be.

    Take too much of their time – Nobody wants to be stuck in a conversation for too much time. Unless you really hit it off, keep your conversations short and pertinent. Being friendly, frequent and focused will keep you front-of-mind.

    Be too hard on yourself – Networking doesn’t come easily for everyone. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be an all-out extrovert to make the most of your contacts. It’ll take time to perfect your approach, but don’t put too much pressure on yourself. It’s just a conversation.

    Other networking don’ts: Forget to say thank you, leave it too long, make things up, shout loudly at people and hope for the best.

    Just remember it is their the first time meeting you as well, first impressions do matter but they also can be just as nervous

    Stay warm

    Keep your home heated at a constant 18°C (65°F). on the thermostat not a timer, You may prefer your main living room to be slightly warmer. Keep your bedroom window closed on a winter’s night. Breathing in cold air can increase the risk of chest infections and colds.

    We have included some ways to keep you warm and safe over winter!

    You maybe able to get help!

    There are grants, benefits and sources of advice available to make your home more energy efficient, improve your heating or help with bills.

    Kent County Council and your local district council may also be able to help with the cost of boiler replacement or insulation through the Warm Homes Scheme.

    Warm Home Discount Scheme

    You could get £140 off your electricity bill for winter 2017 to 2018 under the Warm Home Discount Scheme.

    The money isn’t paid to you - it’s a one-off discount on your electricity bill, between September and March.

    You may be able to get the discount on your gas bill instead if your supplier provides you with both gas and electricity. Contact your supplier to find out.

    The discount won’t affect your Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment.


    There are 2 ways to qualify for the Warm Home Discount Scheme:

    • you get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit - known as the ‘core group’

    • you’re on a low income and meet your energy supplier’s criteria for the scheme - known as the ‘broader group’

    How you apply for the Warm Home Discount Scheme depends on how you qualify for the discount.

    Pre-pay or pay-as-you-go meters

    You can still qualify for the discount if you use a pre-pay or pay-as-you-go electricity meter.

    Your electricity supplier can tell you how you’ll get the discount if you’re eligible, for example a voucher you can use to top up your meter.

    Park (mobile) homes

    You apply a different way if you live in a park home. Contact Charis Grants to find out how to apply.

    If you get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit

    • You qualify for the discount if on 9 July 2017 all of the following applied:

    • your energy supplier was part of the scheme

    • your name (or your partner’s) was on the bill

    • you were getting the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit (even if you get Savings Credit as well)

    This is known as being in the ‘core group’.

    How to apply using the Guarantee Credit element

    You’ll receive a letter by 30 November 2017 telling you how to get the discount if you qualify.

    Your letter will say if you need to call a helpline by 31 January 2018 to confirm your details.

    Your electricity supplier will apply the discount to your bill by the end of March 2018.

    If you didn’t get a letter

    Contact the Warm Home Discount Team if you didn’t get the letter and you think you’re eligible for the ‘core group’.

    If you’re on a low income

    You may be able to apply directly to your electricity supplier for help if you don’t get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit but:

    • your energy supplier is part of the scheme

    • you’re on a low income

    • you get certain means-tested benefits

    This is known as being in the ‘broader group’.

    To get the discount you’ll need to stay with your supplier until it’s paid.

    How to apply

    Your electricity supplier decides who can get the discount - check with your supplier to see if you’re eligible and how to apply.

    Check with your supplier as early as possible. The number of discounts suppliers can give are limited.

    Take care of after yourself!

    • Contact your GP to get your free flu jab if you are aged 65 or over, live in a residential or nursing home, or are the main carer for an older or disabled person. NHS Choices provides information about flu. Visit www.nhs.uk/flu to learn more.

    • Don’t delay in getting treatment for minor winter ailments like colds or sore throats. Visit your local pharmacist for advice on treatment before it gets worse so you can recover quicker.

    • Layer your clothing whether you are indoors or outside. Wrap a scarf around your mouth to protect your lungs from the cold air.

    • Wear shoes with a good grip if you need to go outside.

    • When you’re indoors, try not to sit still for more than an hour or so. Get up, stretch your legs and make yourself a warm drink.

    • Have your heating and cooking appliances checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer to make sure they are operating safely.

    • Contact your water and power suppliers to see if you can be on the Priority Services Register, a service for older and disabled people.

    Check on others

    Check on older neighbours or relatives to make sure they’re safe and well. Make sure they’re warm enough, especially at night, and have stocks of food and medicines so they don’t need to go out during very cold weather. If you’re worried about an older person, contact a family member, the local council 

    Stay safe in your home

    When the temperature drops care needs to be taken not to increase the risk of having a fire in your home. This can happen with greater use of portable heaters and open fires.

    The most important thing you can do is make sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home.

    Alzheimer’s Research UK have revealed the areas hardest hit by dementia in the UK in two interactive maps – with areas on the South coast among the worst affected.

    For the first time, people can see the impact of dementia in their local area and find out how their region compares to the rest of the UK, thanks to the dementia charity Alzheimer’s Research UK, which created the online tool.

    According to the data, coastal constituencies in the south of England have the highest number of people living with dementia per head of population – with Christchurch, in Dorset, topping the list. In Christchurch, 2,400 people have dementia, (2.8 per cent of its overall population) – which is more than double the country’s average of 1.3 per cent.

    The top five constituencies with the highest level of dementia per head of population are:

    • Christchurch: 28 per 1,000 people.

    • New Forest West: 27 per 1,000 people.

    • North Norfolk: 24 per 1,000 people.

    • Clacton: 24 per 1,000 people.

    • Worthing West; 24 per 1,000 people.

    The five lowest constituencies (with 4-5 per 1,000 people) are:

    • Poplar and Limehouse

    • West Ham

    • Bethnal Green and Bow

    • Manchester Central

    • Hackney South and Shoreditch

    In Kent the follow figures from Alzheimer's Research show a total of 25,885 persons living with dementia in our region (shown as CCG areas)

    The UK constituency with the lowest number of people living with dementia is Na h-Eileanan an Siar with 476. This is over five times less than the Isle of Wight which has the most people living with dementia at 2,743.

    Dr Matthew Norton, director of policy at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “Today, one in three people have a family member or close friend with dementia. Despite this, there is still a worrying lack of public understanding about the condition, which is we have developed the dementia hotspots maps.

    “Dementia is not an inevitable part of ageing, it is caused by diseases. Through the power of research, we know we can change the outlook for people with dementia – but to achieve this, research must have the backing of the public and parliament.

    “These maps underline the devastating impact dementia is having on our communities, and we hope it will inspire people to join our movement to bring an end to the fear, harm and heartbreak caused by dementia.”

    Currently, there are 850,000 people in the UK living with dementia but this number is set to rise to one million by 2025. He added: “The last government made dementia a national priority and great strides are being made towards finding an effective treatment and this momentum must continue.”

    The new online interactive tool is part of the Alzheimer’s Research UK Dementia Statistics Hub, which contains up-to-date information about England's number one killer.

    Family Foot Golf with Dementia video

    The Wrinkly Roadshow  and  Cobtree Manor Golf Course had a fantastic time on Sunday 24th September with our Family Footgolf Funday.

    As you know we like to raise awareness of conditions that can affect us as we all get older, It is important not only to raise awareness of people not living with a condition but to also raise the awareness of what you can achieve living with a condition.

    Wayne and Lorraine made a video for "My Time Active" which will, later in the year, be found on the website for the BBC series  "get inspired!" 

    My Time Active at Cobtree Manor Golf Course have worked hard to improve their  experience for people living with dementia.  They have been shortlisted in the Dementia Friendly Kent Awards 2017 under the category of Dementia Friendly Organisation/Company .  A well deserved nomination. Fingers crossed for winning!

    We Did It!

    Our target for 2017 was to outreach an audience of 100,000 to provide information and support for the retired and vulnerable communities and WE DID IT! with some more.

    The month's of June and July provided dozens of events that we attended or hosted that were visited by over 100,000 visitors in just those months and we have the rest of 2017 to go!

    Our largest event "The Wrinkly Roadshow @ Kent County Show" so far was an epic experience, and thank you to everyone to all involved including to to all our members that helped us make it a fantastic 3 Days with over 80,000 visitors at just this one event alone.

    WOW! What an epic 3 days at The Kent County Show we had. We were also lucky enough to have three glorious days and NO RAIN!

    The Wrinkly Roadshow put on a performance at the 2017 Kent County Show and what an amazing response we had from everyone at the showground.

    The atmosphere around the Wrinkly Roadshow marquee was tremendous and had everybody, and we mean everybody, toe tapping, singing, dancing and smiling for the whole weekend.

    To put on a Roadshow of this size takes months of planning and needs a lot people to pull it off for the three day event. Everyone involved with the Wrinkly Roadshow marquee at the Kent County Show were amazing. Our exhibitors, our network members, our volunteers and also our back office team worked so hard to make it happen.  A HUGE THANK YOU is well deserved. 

    We would also like to thank the whole team at the Kent County Agricultural Society who organise this event and have done so every year for 90 years.  They were absolutely professional from the start, nine months ago, and throughout the show. Thank you for your all your support which helped us to have a fantastic event.

    Trying to keep up with our social media was impossible. It went crazy during the whole event.  Thank you to all who tweeted & re-tweeted and posted and shared. We really do read everyone’s comments and these form part of next year's planning.

    We hope that everyone who came along and met us found out that living independently can be achieved with the right people helping.  We hope that everyone learned something different and new which will help them, a relative or a friend enjoy independence longer.  We hope you all had a wonderful fun filled day.

    On Tuesday we joined up with the Maidstone Dementia Friendly Community to arrange a Dementia Awareness Week 2017 event.  As usual the normal "thinking outside the box" took place and we decided that it would be great to show dementia in a different way!


    The day started with a quick introduction by everyone, We had a mix of businesses, individuals and people "living with dementia".  There was a mixture of understanding of what living with dementia means and how it could impact upon us all in the future.  We didn't dwell on that for to long because the sun was shining and we had some balls to hit.


    We had our light lunch and then mixed it up a bit.  Paired up in mixed groups we headed off to collect our buggies.  Those living with dementia had the keys to the buggies.  They were surprised and shocked that they had been let lose with the keys but  they were reassured that we had faith and confidence that they wouldn't drive them into the lake!  Smiles and laughter soon showed through.


    A quick practice on the nets soon showed that we didn't have the next PGA Major's Champion but for sure we were going to have some fun!


    Off to the first tee! As the first team tee'd off we all saw a change in the oldest member or our teams who was living with dementia.  Before his diagnosis he played golf on a regular basis and on the build up to the event had doubts that he could play golf again.  As he stood on the first tee we all saw the moment when he realised that he had still got it what it takes and hit the ball up the fairway.  His smile at the moment when he hit that first ball will stay in all of our memories.


    Off they went up the fairway (okay may be not the fastest and definitely not on par!) laughing all the way.  We had plenty of jokers in the pack as we found out when team two started to take their swing at  the first tee;  the balls hit fence posts, bridges and river banks.  The tears of laughter were heard at the clubhouse.  After a quick catch up with group one who ran off with the bag of balls (certainly needed by team two)  they were away! 


    Now, we did have a team three but we will come back to them shortly....


    Over two hours was spent laughing and enjoying the sun and finding out so much about each other, oh, and six holes of golf (yes two hours and six holes but who cares we had fun!).  Back at the clubhouse we sat and had a drink together sharing what today had giving each and every one of us.  The usual thank yous  and we had great time followed, but it wasn't until a few days later we came to realised how much of an impact this simple day had on everyone.


    Oh, and as for team three, this was made up of two companies and one of the Wrinkly Directors unfortunately no-one "living with dementia" .  All that can be said is they were the last to tee off and the first to be back at the 19th hole.  Impressive I hear you say...... Errr NO they gave up at the second hole when they saw the length of the third fairway.  Something to do with sparkly shoes.  We will leave that there for team three, rest assured they received no prizes not even a medal!


    The businesses and individuals all said that playing golf with someone living with dementia has given them an experience they will never forget; from seeing the effects that dementia has first hand, to listening to their stories as they walked the course.  It has provided an awareness that could never have been shown in a classroom.  We have already had a positive response by all that came along and hope to be working with all again very soon to continue to improve/reduce the impacts of living with dementia.  It doesn't stop here.


    We have had an immense response from all those "living with dementia" here are just some for the comments:


    "Thank you, thank you, thank you for a wicked and wonderful event.  I had a fantastic time!" 


    "We as a group of people living with Dementia can see how you are making a difference to the perception of this terrible decease. It is great the way you have joined so many different groups, business and otherwise, together at your awareness and educational events along with fun events. And long may that continue !!"


    "Thank you for the chance you gave me to kick some butt, they thought I couldn't do it... but I showed them!"


    "I have the most fantastic day.. and I don't want this day to end!"


    Unfortunately, that day did have to end but the compliments kept flooding in when we shared our photos around the group.   One person "living with Dementia! doesn't have email so he was kindly taken to the local library and they both relived the day.


    "it was great for me to reshare those moments with him.. thank you again!" 


    I can't imagine the trouble the pair of them caused in that library that day!


    We have learnt a huge amount from that day.  We not only raised awareness for people who don't live with dementia by giving them a true experience of the effects of dementia but we also raised the awareness of people "living with Dementia" as to what they still can achieve.


    We would like to give a massive thank you to all that came along and took part.  We all played a part in making that day a tremendous and fantastic experience and yes like a good BBC drama we will be back next year.


    And, just before we go, the Wrinkly team would like to pass a special thank you to Cobtree Manor Golf Course who kindly supported our event with golf buggies, a professional (he was definitely required) and prizes and hats for the day.  We would like to thank their on-site team who made everyone feel welcome and at home.  The relaxed atmosphere they provided helped all of us have a great day.
